Why I Created This: The Seeker Story

Posted by Liz Cook on

I recall clearly the development of Seeker in 2014, and the mindset I was in. I felt itchy for new challenges, a refreshing, maybe an escape. As I spent a few months pondering how I might make some changes to my life that would enable me to spend some time away, I started to realise it was not a physical escape I actually needed, but a new way to look at the life I already had.

Marcel Proust said, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

It was out of this mindset shift that Seeker took form.

As I thought about the life I was craving and the things I needed release from, it became clear that I needed new vision, not greener grass. I had so much to be thankful for, and what I was actually trying to escape from more than anything else were the expectations of the world around me, and those I had set for myself.

What was I looking for? And, when I found it, would anything actually change?

As I started to explore what could I shift in my environment, I also began to work on making changes to the way I viewed my life.

As is often the way with me, both poetry and fragrance were a vehicle for this new exploration, and I began translating the emotion and revelation of seeing with new eyes into scent. Creating stories through words and scent is, for me, a potent way of communicating emotion, and telling human stories that are common to all of us.

When I think of escape, as with most people, it's often to a tropical oasis. Wide, sandy beaches, warm humid air, golden sunlight, barefoot and free. So that is what I endeavoured to create with Seeker -  an escape to the tropics, while still maintaining the sense of being home.

The main three materials I chose to focus on included the softest creamy vanilla, extracted with CO2 to keep it delicate and childlike, creamy organic coconut flesh, and a warming, balsamic CO2-extracted coriander seed for depth and contrast. The aim was to create a fragrance that contrasts the feeling of being free in both body and mind, while finding peace and comfort in the familiar.

As you wear it, my hope is that you feel freed and found exactly where you are.
